About the US Youth National Championship Series

The State Cup is a single elimination tournament open to all Virginia travel teams U12-U19.  The U15-U18 girls and boys play in the fall, and the U12-U14 and U19 girls and boys play in the spring.

Semifinals and finals will be played in Richmond at the River City Sportsplex (formerly Sports Quest) Saturday, October 27, and Sunday, November 4.  See VYSA website for full details.

The Region I Championship Tournament will be held in Kingston, RI, June 27-July 3, 2013.  See Region I Tournament website for details.
 
Regional Champions will compete for National Championships on July 22-28 in Overland Park, KS.

The striking black and yellow circuit design of the adidas Finale 12 will be used by all competing clubs in the UEFA Champions League 2012-13 season. Chelsea, as Champions, retain the right to use the Finale Munich in all their home games until the knockout stages.
 
Each VCCL team, boys and girls U11 through U18/19, received a Finale 12 ball.  The home team will provide the match ball with the away team ball used as a backup for each VCCL match.
 
The Finale 12 is used for VCCL match games only.

 One third of Americans will suffer from a skin cancer in their lifetime.   That rate is climbing every year.

-          63,000 melanomas were diagnosed in the United States in 2009. That number is climbing every year.
-          Melanoma kills more than one American every hour.
-          Melanomas and other skin cancers result from damage done by the sun’s rays.
-          Most sun damage is done before 18 years of age.
 
Skin cancers, and skin cancer related deaths are largely preventable by taking a few simple steps. 
 

Most of the damage is done early in life, and the medical community has struggled to find an effective skin cancer prevention program.

Dr. Iah Maher, Assistant Professor of Dermatology at MCV, is the founder of Sun Safe Soccer.  The program is officially being made a national program by the America Society for Dermatologic Surgery.  VCCL is proud to be one of the first participating youth soccer leagues.

The program takes a new approach by teaching soccer coaches about the basics of sun protection and motivating and empowering these proven leaders to pass that knowledge on to their players.

In the coming months, our coaches will receive a special training on the program with strategies to implement the fundamentals into their team routine.

By educating coaches and players about the easy steps to minimize unnecessary sun exposure over time, we can prevent skin cancers and save lives.

The Sun Safe Soccer Program teaches those simple steps.

Before the game: Safety First -- Sunscreen Then Shinguards

 After the game: Cool Down, Cool Off, and Cover Up

In January of 2012, a brain tumor was discovered on Ian’s brain stem.  The tumor was biopsied at Inova Fairfax Hospital, and after a week of pathology testing, Ian was diagnosed with Germinoma, a rare type of germ cell tumor typically resulting from a failure of germ cells to migrate properly in the body. 
 
Ian returned home to Richmond  to to receive chemothereapy and radiation treatments.  Ian is now in the radiation phase of treatment and continues to do well.
